Our Story & Our MissionBy 1997, a Virginia educator recognized the need to offer her students learning experiences beyond the walls of her classroom. Whenever possible, she conducted lessons in the hallway, on the playground, in open fields, under a shady tree - anywhere to give her students the opportunity to experience learning.
The idea for Great Explorations was born during a class field trip to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. The student’s embraced the opportunity to explore and experience what they had been learning in the classroom. Their enthusiasm sparked the idea that more could be done. The idea of making the world her classroom was born. Twenty years later, Great Explorations has grown from a teacher with an idea to a foundation that offers students
During seven years of active summer travel, thirty-four explorers have participated in over forty excursions to more than twenty-five different destinations. Great Explorations volunteers have logged over 2300 hours annually helping students to transform their lives. Our programs are developed by an educator who has a passion for interactive learning and a strong desire to help students imagine and realize the power of their potential. We encourage you to explore our programs to see how we empower students to imagine—and change—their futures. United State Naval Academy, Sub Simulator
